Previously, in 2010, boy Nick Richards, 16, also caught a giant goldfish 41cm long and weighing 2.2kg in a lake in the town of Poole, Dorest county. This is said to be the largest goldfish in the UK.

In addition, another goldfish named Bruce was raised on a fish farm in Dongguan City, China in 2002 with a length of about 37.2cm.

However, according to National Geographic, when comparing the above goldfish with the goldfish of owner Joris Gijsbers, the Netherlands had to give in when it was 47.4cm long and recorded in the Guinness Book of Records.

Goldfish were introduced to Europe around 1600 and entered the United States in 1850. Goldfish are cultured in aquariums, rare in nature.

Under really good care conditions, goldfish can grow to about 16-20cm in length.
