Goldfish populations amounted to thousands of babies born from a pair of ornamental goldfish that owners accidentally or deliberately dropped into Edgewater, a public pond in St Albert. They quickly reached a large number and a length of 30cm. Without being threatened by natural predators, the goldfish could multiply many times, according to CBC News.

Goldfish compete for food with native animals in the area and are considered as invasive species. Authorities fear they can extend their living environment to other lakes and rivers, where vulnerable fish species exist.

"Since goldfish live here compete strongly with any native species, if they swim to the Sturgeon River, native fish are in danger of not being able to live there anymore," said Leah Kongsrude, director of the environmental agency. St Albert, said. "These fishes will defeat them, reducing biodiversity and natural ecosystems will be permanently affected."

In 2015, the winter weather was particularly harsh, so the city government decided to remove the water to ensure the lake was fully frozen. However, when spring comes, the lake water melts and the goldfish is still unaffected. The following year, the authorities used electric shocking to kill fish but this was also ineffective.
