The divers initially thought they discovered toy coins but then they brought these gold coins to the archaeologists for assessment.
Archaeologists later used metal detectors and discovered large amounts of gold coins around the area where divers found the first coins. Divers have delivered all the coins found to the research agency.
Robert Kool, Israeli archaeological expert, said that coins were found in excellent conditions.'They are completely clean and very new despite being in the sea for more than a millennium , ' Kool said.
Sharvit said that these gold coins could come from a ship carrying taxes to Egypt or from a merchant ship along the Mediterranean coast.
The discovery of these gold coins can help supplement 'our understanding of the entire archaeological context and answer many questions that we have not answered for a long time , ' Sharvit added. .
