Hippos close relationship with whales?
The species relationship between whales and hippos has been a controversial topic in biology for the past 200 years.
By analyzing the characteristics of many different animal groups, recently US and French scientists discovered half-terrestrial half-ancestors of whales and hippos divided into two groups: marine animals mammals (including whales, dolphins) and mammals love to live in water shaped like pigs. With the law of adaptive survival, the first species later abandoned the land, degenerated legs and gradually adapted completely in the water environment.
The other species thrived for more than 40 million years later and went extinct some 2.5 million years ago. According to Dr. Jean-Renaud Boisserie of the French National Academy of Sciences, this second species is the intermediate species between hippopotamus and whales, which later leave a single descendant, the hippopotamus.
Previously, many scientists also believed that hippos are related to pigs due to the similar characteristics of the molars. But when conducting genetic analysis showed that the hippopotamus has many things in common with more mammalian marine animals and species development, proving that it is closely related to whales.
