Huge ancient temple and unresolved mysteries

Constructed from hundreds of tons of stones, the Jupiter temple in Lebanon is one of the buildings marking ancient civilization.

On a 7m wide rock platform, the Jupiter temple in Baalbek, Lebanon, is known as the largest ancient Roman sanctuary.Until now, the temple's designer as well as the exact time to build this project is still unknown.The temple could begin to build around 16 BC and was nearly completed around 60 AD.(Photo: Brewminate).

However, to create this huge temple complex, humans have taken 3 centuries to build.In 524-525, lightning destroyed the building.Later, the emperor Justinian (reigned from 527-565) began to remove the granite columns.When the crusades (religious wars) took place, the stones were reused to make the fort.(Photo: Pinterest).

The temple is 88x48m in size, surrounded by no less than 54 stone columns.The stone pillars are 20m high, about 2m in diameter.The upper fixed horizontal beam has a height of 5m.Inside the temple are tall walls and columns made of cedar wood to support the large roof.(Photo: Istock).

Lion-head gutters are designed to drain water when the snow melts.In the early spring, the view becomes beautiful when the water melts and falls from a height of 25 m.The temple was built to worship Jupiter Heliopolitanus, the supreme deity in ancient Roman mythology and religion.(Photo: Uerria.witclub).

The temple was built on a 13m high terrace made from 24 monolithic rocks.The lowest weight stone is about 300 tons.3 rocks on the western end have dimensions of not less than 19x4x3 m and weigh about 800 tons each.(Photo: Minube).

Over time, the temple was left with only six southern pillars with fixed horizontal beams above.The architecture is almost perfect in the south.Meanwhile, the winter winds made the northern architectural surface almost bare.The remaining horizontal beams are lifted by 6 stone pillars weighing up to 60 tons, an angle weighing more than 100 tons.(Image: Wikimedia Commons).
