According to a report published in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society: Letters, scientists at the Physical Research Laboratory in Ahmedabad (India) observed and recorded changes in surface temperature occurring in the area of ​​the Moon near Earth in early 2020.

Specifically, they discovered an unusual drop in temperature at six observation points on the Moon during that period.

Experts say the phenomenon occurs because human activities are limited when governments enforce lockdowns, leading to a sharp decrease in radiation emitted from the Earth's surface and causing the Moon's surface temperature to drop.

During the day, the Moon is bombarded by radiation from the Sun. However, at night, the Moon receives radiation from Earth, and the amount of radiation has been shown to affect the surface temperature of the Earth's natural satellite.

Scientists have also previously found that nighttime temperatures on the Moon can fluctuate depending on the amount of radiation emitted from Earth.

"Therefore, our study suggests that the Moon may have been affected by the Covid-19 lockdown, as evidenced by the unusually low temperature on the Moon's surface at night ," the scientists concluded.

The report also allows scientists to use the surface of the Moon as a perfect test bed for studying the effects of climate change on Earth.
