Israel successfully tested new laser missile defense system
Israel's Defense Minister Benny Gantz said on April 14 that the country's new laser missile defense system had successfully intercepted mortars, rockets and anti-tank missiles in recent tests. .
According to Gantz, the Israeli-made laser system is designed to complement a range of Iron Dome air defense systems deployed by the country and will become operational "as soon as possible". .
Gantz added that the goal is to deploy laser systems around the Israeli border in the next decade. The tests took place last month in the Negev desert. Earlier, in February, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said Israel would start using the system within a year.
Mr. Gantz claims the laser system will be effective, innovative and economical protection. Israel has developed or deployed a wide range of systems to intercept everything from long-range missiles to missiles launched from just a few kilometers away. The country has also equipped its tanks with a missile defense system.
One may not know much about the effectiveness of laser systems. It is expected to be deployed on land, in the air and at sea.
Israel says its Iron Dome defense system has been wildly successful, with a 90% interception rate. However, officials say the system is quite expensive, while the new laser defense system will be much more cost-effective.
