Mandy English, director Uralla, said twins are rare in the kangaroo world. The first pair of twin kangaroos was recorded in protected areas in Australia 15 years ago.
"This is a very rare phenomenon. We are fortunate to see two twin kangaroos in their mother's pocket. We are very excited , " Mandy said.
In a wild environment, twin kangaroo are often difficult to survive because the mother cannot care for both at the same time. When growing to about 3kg, kangaroo still lives in her mother's bag. For mothers, nurturing and caring for both is not easy.
Usually, the mother will only retain a healthier individual to nourish. Caregivers at Uralla will continue to monitor the mother kangaroo, named Izzy, in the next 5 months. " If Izzy left one, we would keep it and take care of it," Mandy said.
