Korean Fearless Syndrome 4
Koreans hardly use the number 4 in elevators, hotel rooms . because they think this number brings a bit of awe.
The reason for the alienation of Korean No. 4 originated from the old concept. In Korean, the number 4 sounds like the word "dead" and brings bad luck . Koreans even "boycott" both the number 4 and combination numbers like 14, 44, and 444 . They think that this combination is even more unlucky than the number 4 alone.
Koreans often avoid number 4 by replacing with other digits such as 3F, 3A.(Photo: Sericaconsulting).
Scientists believe it is the fourth fear syndrome (scientific name is Tetraphobia) . The manifestation of this syndrome is to avoid use, contact with number 4 and multiples of number 4, quite common in East Asian countries such as China, Japan, and Korea.
To avoid this number, Koreans often use different ways. As in the elevator, people change the number 4 by 3A, 3F . or by the letter "F" - short for "Four" (number 4 in English). In public buildings, funeral parlors, hospitals . floors 4 and 4 are often overlooked.
Many tourists are confused when going on an elevator or looking for a hotel room in Korea.(Photo: Ninon's hour from Seoul - Eklablog).
Korean Fearless Syndrome 4 sometimes causes confusion for foreign visitors because many people believe that they are in the wrong place when seeing tables 3A or 3F, or the work for the table to be missing. In addition to number 4, Koreans also abstain from number 13 . They often do not gather for 13 people because they think this number is associated with evil or unlucky things.
