Laughing is also a sign of frustration

A new study finds that most people smile when frustrated, even if they don't realize it, and the computer can be " better" than people in distinguishing what is a real smile. Where is the disillusioned smile.

Smile shows many different emotions of people. So how to detect its hidden meaning? According to new research, we can base on the time of smile to translate it.

When conducting experiments, Massachusetts Institute of Technology researcher Ehsan Hoque found that the obvious difference between happy smile and smile contained disappointment. That is: Normally, happy smiles form slowly, while disillusioned smiles appear quickly but also disappear in a flash.

When the computer is programmed with information about the timing of 2 types of smiles (true happiness and real frustration), it can identify them with accuracy up to 90%. Meanwhile, the participants in the research - the "naked, the flesh and the eyes " - can only accomplish this task with much lower accuracy.

The Live Science page quoted the study author as saying, the results of the analysis will help to create computers that can respond to each state of their users. One of the research goals is 'to create a smarter and more polite computer (with people)'.

The study also aims at an understanding of subtle expressions, which contain human emotions. According to Mr. Hoque, people with autism are always taught that smiles refer to someone happy but the reality is not so simple. Understanding the difference between different types of smiles can be helpful for teaching children to autism to identify smiles.

In addition, the research results can provide useful information for market research experts because 'when customers smile, they do not necessarily feel satisfied'.
