Learning to give birth by ... robots

The birth rate in Korea has been the lowest ever. Therefore, medical students in the country are using robots to help delivery.

Medical Center in Seoul Kyunghee University is the first in Korea to use Noelle sized robots as real people and infants of "her" to help the students to practice midwifery.

" With this exercise tool, we not only perform normal deliveries but also complications such as backbiting, caesarean section, " Professor Jung Eui said. " The students can practice in situations Very real with this mannequin . "

The students gather around Noelle when " she " is lying on the table. They in turn watch the signs of life and pull the baby out. The baby, also a robot, is equipped with light bulbs on his hands and cheeks to show his health. The green light means that there is a problem, and the red light indicates that everything is fine. Students say using Noelle is more helpful than sitting in class and taking notes.

According to Professor Jung, the lower fertility rate in Korea makes it less likely for students to observe and practice delivery, so the presence of Noelle is extremely necessary. South Korea currently has a population of more than 48 million and the world's lowest fertility rate: 1.08 babies per woman.

Noelle was purchased for $ 20,000 from Gaumard Scientific in Miami, USA. It was produced in 2000 and has sold more than 400 products in the United States.
