Living in the city makes people stupid?

Latest studies show that polluted air reduces intellectual ability and harms the brain. This effect is evident in people living in big cities, where air quality is very far from ideal measurements.

A group of scientists from Ohio University (USA), led by Professor Laura Fonkem, has done research on the impact of the air quality of megacities on people. The results of the study were published in Molecular Psychiatry.

The atmosphere in megacities greatly influences intellectual ability.

In their experiments, scientists divided the experimental mice into two groups: Group 1 for breathing polluted air with the average composition of megacities of many countries in the world for a long time. is 10 consecutive months, 5 days a week, 6 hours a day. Group 2 lives in a normal air environment used as a control.

They then assessed the ability of these two groups to be "wise" through the tests that still apply.

They put lab rats into a tightly sealed sealed box, in which there was only a small hole for them to escape. Note that rats do not tolerate strong light because basically, because of the habit of running at night, they have to find ways to escape from the lighting.

While group 2 mice always know how to escape through holes and miss the way in, a mouse in a much more "stupid" group looks for a very slow escape, and cannot remember the way it was found. So, they were still lethargic as if they were depressed and often panicked.

Scientists believe that the reason why the mouse breathes in polluted air is the solid particles . These particles cause inflammation of different parts of the body in general, especially the brain. They damage the parts of the brain responsible for keeping short-term memory and long-term memory as well as sensory formation. The hippocampuss itself is the most susceptible to inflammation.

In addition, it was found that the brain structure of mice exposed to polluted air seemed more porous and the number of nerve cells was reduced.

Thus, the polluted air in the megacities of different countries (the composition is not much different) is a frightening threat to the people living here.
