Monkey can identify himself in the mirror

Recent research by scientists shows that monkeys can recognize them in mirrors if trained.

The laser is projected onto the monkey's face, creating an excitation element that detects differences in mirrors. After a few weeks of training, they began to recognize that face and laser, moving their hands over the small red spots, then sniffing their fingers. This is an action that shows that this animal can identify itself in the mirror.

"Our research shows that monkey brains have a basic" hardware "(related to self-recognition ability) . However, they need proper training so that 'software' does the job. This function ", UPI quoted Neng Gong, expert of Chinese Academy of Sciences, explained.

According to scientists, when this behavior is trained, monkeys can use mirrors to test their body parts, in addition to other natural ways. The rhesus monkey (also known as macaque) is one of the fastest learning species.

The team hopes that with this finding, they can explore neurological mechanisms related to mirror recognition, paving the way for treatments for patients with disorders such as mental retardation, autism, schizophrenia or Alzheimer's. People with this disease cannot identify themselves in the mirror.
