NASA will grow lettuce on the universe

Experts at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) of the US Aerospace Agency (NASA) plan to bring lettuce grown on the International Space Station (ISS).

According to the NASA website (nasa.gov), the KSC team will bring the Veggie vegetable system , just as small as a microwave oven, to ISS on December 9 by SpaceX spacecraft 3. Astronauts on ISS will grow lettuce with Veggie system.

The ABC News news agency quoted scientist Gioia Massa of KSC as saying the Veggie system would not immediately provide green vegetables for ISS astronauts to enjoy. ' They will grow lettuce, frozen packaging and send it to Earth - Ms Massa revealed - We need to analyze whether any of the microorganisms exist in lettuce grown in the universe before determining it. Safe enough for the astronauts on ISS to eat '.

Veggie is a joint project of NASA and American corporation Orbital Technologies. Although this is a US project, Massa experts believe that countries can work together to implement this experiment. Vegetables grown in the Veggie system in orbit may be completely different from the vegetables grown on Earth.

NASA's website says Veggie uses a red and green LED system, creating a purple light stream to facilitate photosynthesis. In addition, Veggie has a green LED. When all three lights were on, Veggie's light emitted was a bright purple. NASA chose to use LED lights because they work for a long time.

Ms Massa said that due to tight space conditions and lack of energy on ISS, Veggie could not grow many vegetables. For example, growing tubers like carrots is impossible. But astronauts can grow beets, chopped mustard or chrysanthemum.

NASA also plans to plant flowers on ISS, because planting trees and flowers will have a positive impact on astronauts' psychology to live in difficult and deprived conditions on space.
