New benefits of meditation

The long-term benefit of meditation is to have a calm mind. But more than that, British scientists have discovered that meditation helps strengthen the brain.

Even a short meditation course helps strengthen connections between regions that regulate the emotional responses of the brain. This will make it easier for us to stay calm.

Chinese and American researchers at Orengon University (USA) have focused on the effects of meditation techniques called physical integration (IBMT). Based on traditional Chinese medicine, IBMT combines posture, imagination and body relaxation and breathing techniques.

In the study, meditators will join the IBMT program for 1.5 hours per week for 1 month. Another group also learned 11 hours but was a basic relaxation technique. The brain scan showed that the brain connection in IBMT group began to intensify after 6 hours of practice. This difference is obvious after 11 hours of training.

This 'structural change' is most pronounced in cingulate-linked fibers in the front, the part of the brain that helps regulate emotions and behavior. This shows that the significance of research is not only to help people reduce straightness. Inferior cingulate inactivity is associated with memory loss, hyperactivity disorder, attention deficit, depression and schizophrenia.

An earlier study found that just 20 minutes of IBMT training was enough to reduce stress.

The report was published in the Proceedings of the American Academy of Sciences.
