New solar storm warning system
Group of physicists from the University of Delaware USA and Chungnam National University, Hanyang University, Korea have successfully developed a warning system for high-energy particle sprays from strong solar storms. .
The new system has the important advantage of being designed to forecast radiation particles that help scientists predict the intensity of solar storms as they target the Earth. In particular, in some cases of solar storms occurring at low energy levels, the system can alert 166 minutes (nearly 3 hours) of the weather conditions in advance.
Sunstroke when targeting the Earth will cause more damage depending on the level
To test the accuracy of the new warning system, researchers compared data from geostationary satellites that observed 12 solar storms. The results showed that the charged particles measured by the system were higher than the satellites from 40 million to 80 million volts.
According to the scientists, solar storms will release plasma particles and charged particles into space that may pose radiation hazards to orbiting satellites, space astronauts and electronic infrastructure on Earth.
With the advantages of the new system, scientists hope that next year when solar activity reaches its peak it will have a beneficial effect. Especially when NASA is planning to fly to the Moon and Mars will also help physicists be able to determine the impact of solar storms on astronaut health.
The new alert system is funded by the National Research Foundation of Korea, the National Science Foundation and NASA.
