Panama preserves golden frogs

Panamanian scientists say they have successfully preserved rare yellow frogs.

The golden frog is one of Panama's symbols because of its marvelous beauty. Recently, this species is at risk of extinction due to an " attack " of a poisonous fungus, causing skin sores to cause them to suffocate and die.

The Center for Amphibian Conservation (CCA) said scientists have succeeded in breeding and regenerating species by taking them out of the swamp.

After more than a year of research with the help of the Houston Botanical Center and the Smitthsonian Institute, Panama scientists have produced golden frog eggs and for the first time hundreds of tadpoles were born in new habitats. However, this is the first test so only about 50% of tadpoles become yellow frogs.

CCA also said there are about 60 species of frogs in the world as well as many other amphibians killed by poisonous mushrooms.
