According to the development orientation, by 2020, the first nuclear power unit (capacity of 1,000 MW) will come into operation. In 2025, the total capacity of nuclear power plants is about 8,000 MW and this number increases to 15,000 MW by 2030. The rate of nuclear power accounts for 10% of the total power capacity.

The government also announced 8 locations to build nuclear power plants in Ninh Thuan, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen, Ha Tinh, Quang Ngai, each with 4-6 units built.
