Portrait of 12 new freshwater fish species in Vietnam
On December 21, Ho Chi Minh City-based Wildlife Protection Agency (WAR) announced the discovery of 12 new freshwater fish species in Vietnam.
These are the species discovered in surveys in Phu Quoc from the end of 2008 to the present.
According to Mr. Bui Huu Manh, WAR Conservation Officer, some species are guessed by foreign researchers in Vietnam because they are recorded in neighboring areas such as Laos, Cambodia and Thailand. was confirmed as espei Trigonostigma. Some species were only recorded in Indonesia and Malaysia such as Barbucca cf. diabolica.
For temporarily identified species, there may be new species for science. Therefore, the current identification is only at the initial stage. Additional findings or changes may be published in the future.
Mr. Manh said: ' The discovery of these new freshwater fish species in Vietnam shows that there are still many species of freshwater fish that have no other economic values yet to be discovered .'
According to WAR, many species of freshwater fish without economic value are gradually declining in quantity due to polluted or lost water sources. These fishes play an important role in ecological balance. The discovery of these fish species helps keep track of changes in fish populations and thus implements appropriate conservation measures.
In the future, WAR will continue the research and investigation of freshwater fish as well as the breeding program and release indigenous fish to nature. Implementing this program, in early December 2010, WAR also released more than 100 Lia thia fish (Betta spp.) Born in the Breeding Program and released native fish to nature at Cau Do foot, a tributary of the Saigon River.
