Recover contact lenses for fear of blindness
A worldwide recall order for a US-made contact lens fluid has just been raised after concerns that it may cause serious eye damage, even blindness.
California-based Advanced Medical Optics has announced a global recall order for Complete Multipurpose and asked consumers to stop using the product.
Speaking last Saturday, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said the solution increases the risk of rare eye disease acanthamoeba keratitis - a disease that can cause severe vision loss or even blind
Acanthamoeba is a very small, water parasite that can damage the cornea. The disease mostly happens to people wearing contact lenses. The risk increases when the user goes swimming.
The CDC reports from an investigation of 46 cases since January 2005. Among them, 39 wore contact lenses and 21 of them used the Complete Multipurpose solution. The risk of getting the disease in the group using this solution is 7 times higher. Early symptoms of persistent redness and eye pain.
