Russia set up an DNA bank of all species

With the project called Noah Ship, scientists from Moscow National University (MSU) want to fulfill the mission of the Noah character in the Bible.

It is to preserve the DNA source of all living and extinct species in the world.

The Russian Today site quoted MSU president Viktor Sadivnichy as saying the project was invested up to $ 194 million. According to the plan, the DNA bank will be completed in 2018 with a total area of 430 km 2 , located right at MSU.

DNA data bank will collect bio-products from all branches of MSU such as biological garden, anthropological museum, zoological museum . Biological samples are taken from many simple sources, do not hurt or affect species such as saliva, hair, hair, blood samples or even feces.

All MSU faculties will participate in the research and collection of biological products of the Noah Ship project . This is also an activity to promote young researchers of MSU to participate.

Although it was the first country to build a DNA bank of species, before the UK, Britain had a similar project called Frozen ark, which helped preserve the endangered DNA of species. . Regardless of natural conservation efforts, according to Frozen ark, in the next 50 years, about 30% of terrestrial and aquatic species will become extinct.

If stored frozen in accordance with standards, along with the development of molecular biotechnology, in the near future frozen cells can completely regenerate species.

Frozen cells contain a source of biological DNA in addition to being able to stay safe at very low temperatures, which can preserve genetic resources for up to a hundred years and consume very little storage space. Under Frozen ark, an ordinary house can store up to 10 million biological samples.
