Scientists create new materials that are as durable as diamond

Novosibirsk scientists have made super-durable materials from diamond with a special structure. The unique technology of Siberian experts will allow for several times the life of cutting tools. Tests have shown that new material products surpass 20 times compared to similar products. DIY made of synthetic diamonds and a mixture of diamonds with hard alloys.

The drill is made of new material cut at a speed of 140 meters / minute, but currently no other material can guarantee such high speeds. Ensuring unique properties are special diamond-alloy components, which are currently only available in Russia. These are not jewels to make jewelry, but diamond chips , the only source available at meteorite craters in the Yakutia region.

During the talk with the radio correspondent "Voice of Russia" , expert Valentin Afanasiev from the Institute of Geology and Minerals of the Siberian branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences said: 'The crater has formed about 36 million years ago. The celestial body that has fallen into rocky mountains has many lead. The impact was so strong that the stone melted, under the influence of enormous pressure and very high temperature, graphite transformed into diamonds with a special structure. Thanks to this structure, diamonds are highly resistant to abrasion. '

According to experts, in this crater, the number of "technical" diamonds is much higher than the precious diamonds. Diamond mining enterprise has been operating here until the 80s of the last century, but then the mining operations stopped because new trends appeared - building artificial diamond manufacturing plants .

However, Novosibirsk scientists have focused their attention on natural diamonds from crater meteorites in Yakutia, and have manufactured materials that are super unique in the world. Valentin Afanasiev shares new technological know-how: 'We take diamond powder and bond with certain materials. For example, we attached cobalt to silicon. This process is carried out in equipment that ensures high pressures of about 100,000 atmospheres and temperatures of up to 2,000 degrees Celsius. As a result, high-tech materials are obtained to produce cutting tools'.

Scientists note that the new material is extremely important for machinery and mining industry, especially oil extraction from shale. Such jobs are very complicated, so the drilling tool is easily broken. The new material will increase the life of the drill. Price of new materials has not been determined. After valuation, the inventors will bring the product to the market.
