Self-cleaning plastic membrane inspired by cheese

The Swiss Institute of Technology has developed a green cheese-based food film, with food preservatives and self-cleaning products that can be reused several times.

The researchers sprayed on a thin plastic film, a mixture of Penicillium roqueforti , which is used to ferment and produce a blue cheese flavor (blue or blue-gray cheese on the surface). A film with tiny holes covered with mold. The holes must be small enough to hold the mold in the middle but at the same time large enough for the liquid to penetrate.

A small experiment was carried out by slurrying aqueous solution onto the product. Two weeks later, mold "cup" of sugar water and then return to status "hibernation" . Mold will react when bacteria appear on the protective film surface. Then, the mold will kill bacteria, keep the food does not rancid quickly. Just kept in a humid environment and will not dry up, the mold will continue to work, even when rubbed with an alcohol- or soap-based antiseptic.
