This is the invention of Dr. Emil Jovanov, lecturer in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Alabama. The special vial works by using a sensor capable of recording the time the lid of the vial is opened, while monitoring the number of pills or drug capacity (if liquid) remaining inside . When the sensor detects a change, it sends information to the patient's phone with a message or email.

Every time when it is time to take the medicine, the small bulb in the vial will blink with a reminder sound. Dr Jovanov said the technology for making smart potions was transferred to AdhereTech.

To test the utility of the device, New York City Economic Development Company and Mayor Michael Bloomberg have donated $ 100,000 to the Weill Cornell Medical University of Cornell University Institute to conduct trials on 70 patients. HIV, people who are reported to forget to take medication regularly.

The clinical trial is expected to last for 12 weeks, of which only half of the participants use smart pills. In addition, AdhereTech plans to test 1,000 smart vials in type 2 diabetics. If the tests are successful, soon the product will be available at pharmacies.
