Snake originates from the ground

According to a surprising finding about the evolution of snakes, most cold-blooded species residing on the ground today originate from underground ancestors.

The study is based on 44 genes, 161 species of lizards and snakes, one of the largest sources of genetic data on reptiles, suggesting that most snakes come from a group of bizarre cave snakes called scolecophidian blind.

The finding shows that the snake's ancestors lived on the ground, and thousands of snakes present on the ground all evolved from this group of cave snakes, according to team leader John J. Wiens of New York University (USA).

According to a report published in san Biology Letters, ancient ancestral traces are still present in modern snakes, such as where they live, snakes are always elongated and their tails are short, body shape only occurs in reptiles living underground.

Modern snakes still retain their ancestral body shapes to easily reside in any corner of the globe, from dense forests to deserts and even underwater.
