Sonia Harmand, an archaeologist at Stony Brook University, USA, found stone tools during an excavation in the Lomekwi 3 region, west of Lake Turkana, Kenya. They date to about 3.3 million years, 700,000 years earlier than the oldest tools people have ever known in history.

Harmand and colleagues approached the archaeological site since 2011. So far, they have unearthed a total of 20 pieces of tools in the underground sediment and 130 pieces of ground-based tools.

" The devices are intentionally created. They are not the result of accidental fractures , " IB Times quoted Harmand, saying.

If stone tools were actually 3.3 million years old, they could exist long before the arrival of the genus Homo 2.8 million years ago. Harmand believed that the tool was produced by one of the two ancient gibbon species Kenyanthropus or australopithecines.
