The man broke the ice on the lake surface, lit a fire and a very interesting phenomenon happened.

Recently, a video posted on Facebook is intriguing for many netizens around the world.

Specifically, the clip recorded a man standing in the middle of a frozen lake. He used a knife to break the surface of the lake, light a match and then from that hole a fire broke out.

The video attracted more than 6 million views. Many rumors have been raised, some even claim that this is a consequence of climate change.

But in fact, this is just a very normal phenomenon in temperate and tropical countries in the winter that you will discover soon.

The phenomenon is common in ponds and lakes around the world

The cause of the fire lake surface comes from a very basic gas - methane gas (CH 4 ) - also known as natural gas. Under standard conditions, methane is a colorless, odorless, flammable gas that meets fire.

But what does this relate to in this case? Because ponds and lakes are a continuously moving ecosystem, in which the bottom mud layer contains a lot of bacteria.

These bacteria are responsible for decomposing anything that sinks to the bottom: dead animals, leaves and other organic matter.

The cause of the burning lake surface came from a very basic gas - methane gas (CH 4 ).

Under anaerobic conditions - lack of oxygen - these materials will decompose, producing methane gas . Therefore, methane also has another name as "pond gas" or swamp / mud gas.

When the weather gets warmer, the lake air will form small bubbles that we often see on the water. However, this process still occurs even when the lake surface freezes.

Because methane is insoluble in water, it floats to the surface and accumulates just below the ice, forming white spaces as shown below.

Methane gas escapes from under the ice.

According to calculations, 1m 3 of natural gas when burned will produce heat equivalent to 0.6kg of gasoline, or 0.8kg of coal.

Therefore, many areas of the world have used this gas as fuel, or used in industrial production.

There is a special feature of methane, which is that it can only be produced by decomposing organic compounds.

Thus the existence of methane is considered by many scientists as "evidence of life" . Even finding methane gas is one of the priorities when studying extraterrestrial planets (as is the case with Mars).
