This monastery, founded in 1183 by the Serbie Domain Duke Stefan Nemanja and later developed by his sons became a tomb of the Nemanja dynasty and is a key point in Serbie history over the centuries.

Inside the monasteries walls there are other chapels built and decorated by medieval Christian artists with marble statues and soft frescoes like the Virgin Mary. At the famous "church of the king", the Sainte Anne - et - Joachim time house, completed in 1314.

The frescoes of the Virgin Mary's house (1208-1209) show a new concept of space and expression and are an important milestone in the history of Byzance, Duccio and Gioto in the second half XIII century, all originated from this trend. The monastery is well preserved and recorded in the World Heritage List in 1986 . However, the authorities plan to build a dam near the building and move the Studenica river.

In the fall of 1988, Unesco experts visited the site and assessed the possible impacts on the project.
