Students invent 'airbags' against broken phone screens

A student at Aalen University in Germany invented a form of "airbags" for phones similar to car airbags.

The good news for those who often drop phones, this is the solution they have longed for: the phone case has a "proactive shock reduction" mechanism with integrated sensors and 8 hook-shaped springs.

The sensor automatically detects the free fall of the phone, then activates the spring to protect the phone from direct contact with the ground.

Philip Frenzel - who designed the case, called the invention " air-bag" for the phone . Each corner in the design is equipped with 2 springs. It is still unclear what method Frenzel uses to prevent the springs from automatically activating unexpectedly.

After picking up the phone, the user simply folds the spring back into the case to get ready for . the next drop.

Thanks to this invention, Frenzel won the highest award from the German Mechatronics Association, though the design was only a prototype. He also registered the copyright for design so we can experience this invention in the near future.

This marvelous back cover works perfectly on a flat surface, but no information is available to indicate whether the design will yield the same results if the phone falls on a rough, sharp edge.

In the case of the case, users find a myriad of options, from waterproof design to the introduction "cannot be destroyed" , but the design of Frenzel is unique.
