Stunned to find a source of cosmic rays from the star system Eta Carinae

Data from NASA's NuSTAR X-ray telescope shows that the star system Eta Carinae, the largest, brightest star system is generating high-energy cosmic rays, by accelerating charged particles near the speed of light. shining.

Located 7,500 light-years from Earth, the Eta Carinae star system is formed by two stars that are 90 and 30 times the mass of the Sun, extending 225 million km (140 million miles). , quickly became the second brightest cluster in the sky.

"Both have strong winds called stellar winds , " said Michael Corcoran, a researcher at NASA's Goddard Space Center.

"These winds are in conflict in the complex orbital cycle, producing low-energy X-rays, which we have been tracking for more than two decades."

Recently, however, the Fermi Gamma Space Telescope observes an unusual change in high-energy gamma-ray radiation emitted by this star system.

High-energy gamma-ray radiation in the latest release exceeded 30,000 volts of electrons, about three times higher than the cosmic shock wave.

The cause of this abnormality is still not found by experts.
