Take the submarine robot into the ocean of Jupiter

Well-known NASA researcher Steve Squyres has proposed the idea of bringing a submarine robot to explore the ice giant on the moon of Jupiter's Europa to find life.

This idea was presented by Squyres at a space nuclear technology meeting in Texas on March 21. According to Squyres, bringing Jupiter's ocean exploration submarine is the best opportunity to explore life there.

To date, many scientists believe that Jupiter's moon Europa is one of the best planets in the solar system that can nourish life beyond Earth. Because Europa has a giant ocean underneath the ice. Furthermore this ocean floor has hydrothermal holes that can create an ecological diversity.

However, Squyres also noted that making submarine robots to explore Jupiter's oceans is a difficult task. Because of the high technical requirements, robots must not only penetrate the ice 10km thick but also dive deep into the bottom and have enough energy to get out of the water.

Moreover, implementing this task will be very expensive, about 4.7 billion USD. Meanwhile, the US government budget for NASA in 2013 was only $ 1.2 billion. So NASA is looking for less expensive research directions. But NASA will also be ready to deploy other plans when funding conditions are available.
