The 2016 Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to people who end their bloodbath in Colombia

The 2016 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to the Colombian president by successfully negotiating a peace agreement with FARC rebels, ending many decades of unrest in the country.

On October 7 in Oslo, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the 2016 Nobel Peace Prize winner as Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos.

The announcement of the Norwegian Nobel Committee said Mr Santos was awarded for "fierce efforts to end more than 50 years of civil war that killed at least 220,000 Colombians and left nearly 6 million homeless."

This award, according to the committee, should be regarded as a recognition for the people of Colombia, who "suffer much and suffering . but still do not give up hope for peace".

Mr. Santos initiated negotiations that led to the signing of a peace agreement between the Colombian government and the FARC guerrilla force. Although he knew that the deal would be controversial when so many victims were killed by the FARC during the past 50 years, Mr. Santos persisted in pursuing this peace agreement.

The civil war that lasted for more than 50 years in Colombia was one of the longest civil wars in history.

The result came as a surprise because less than a week earlier, Colombians rejected the deal during the referendum. The parties are expected to re-negotiate.

There have been fears that violence may return if the FARC forces refuse to return to the negotiating table. The Nobel Committee acknowledged that this referendum was not as good as Mr. Santos and created many questions for Colombia's future.

"This makes it important for parties to respect the ceasefire agreement," the Commission's statement said. According to the Commission, the results of the referendum are not synonymous with the "dead peace process".

Civil war in Colombia is one of the longest civil wars in modern history and is currently the only armed conflict to continue in America.

According to the Nobel Committee, despite defeat in the referendum, Mr. Santos's peace agreement has caused "a bloody conflict to come closer to a peaceful solution".

This year's Nobel Peace Prize winner is selected from the 376 nominations list, including 228 individuals and 148 groups, the most ever. However, the specific identities of the nominations are kept confidential and 50 years after the award of the new publication, similar to other Nobel prizes.

From 1901 to 2015, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded 96 times to individuals and groups. In 2015, the Norwegian Nobel Committee was surprised to give the prize to the Tunisian Four Nations Dialogue Ministry for its efforts to bring democracy to the North African country.

The only Vietnamese who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize was Mr. Le Duc Tho, representative of the Vietnam Democratic Republic delegation signing the Paris 1973 Agreement. However, Mr. Le Duc Tho refused to accept the prize with the reason of peace. The bottle has not been repeated in Vietnam. He was also the only person in the history of the award who refused to accept the award .
