Everyday, when passing through mechanical facilities, Thang and Trung found welding and cutting metals using electricity and acetylene toxic and dangerous. Electric welding machines create electric arc, metal splashes, making welders work in hazardous environments. At the same time, in the process of learning, the couple realized that water is a cheap source of fuel, when electrolysis produces oxygen and hydrogen, produces high heat, can weld metal. Since then, Thang and Trung have been determined to build metal cutting machines that use water , which is environmentally friendly, to overcome the disadvantages of electric welding and steam welding machines.

The work of creating and testing this product is beyond the textbook knowledge, making it difficult for the classmates to meet. Fortunately, they were helped by their families and teachers. Thang has learned more from his father, who is a technical worker at Tam Diep Cement Plant. Mr. Dinh Khac Xuan was also directly assigned by the school to guide and support the students to build this machine.

Mr. Xuan said, this topic is very new so you and yourselves have to learn the principles and documents in reference books, especially the websites of applied physics and foreign materials for manufacturing. Teachers and students have just created, and have to learn and learn so it takes a lot of effort.

Win shared the biggest difficulty of the group is to make batteries for water electrolysis. This is a new knowledge that you must search online and newly created foreign documents. They also find it difficult to purchase components such as power supplies, water tanks because they are not available as designed.

From the water electrolyte, the separated oxygen and hydrogen gas are collected at the same time, easily causing fire and explosion, so the machine is fitted with a safety gas collection system, leading these two substances through the water environment to cool down.

Metal cutting welding machine using water fuel can produce heat over 2,000 degrees Celsius to weld iron, copper, aluminum, zinc, stainless steel up to 1cm thick. The machine can be used in construction, fabrication and repair industry, and can weld small components that require high precision without the use of additional air cylinders.

Thus, the machine has easy-to-use, environmentally friendly advantages, does not affect health and safety for users. Water materials are also easy to find, do not need acetylene gas factories, do not need air compressors to tank and transport to processing facilities, so it is particularly useful in difficult travel areas.

Ngo Duc Thang and Pham Thanh Trung studied together from a young age, were passionate about scientific research and had many innovative products. Since the 10th grade, they have successfully designed a green park model using clean energy. In the 2015 National High School Science and Technology Science Competition in 2015, a water-fuel metal cutting machine was awarded the second prize in the field of mechanical engineering and was awarded by the Union of American Science Associations.
