The comet was named the P / 2014 C1 'TOTAS' to recognize the merits of the team responsible for the Teide Observatory of Tenerife's Asteroids Survey in Spain.

TOTAS detection happens by accident, while the telescope at Tenerife under the European Space Agency (ESA) conducts the routine observation cycle. The asteroid center of the International Astronomical Union officially announced the new discovery after receiving similar results from eight other observatories.

The TOTAS comet is really faint and small in size, moving in orbit between Jupiter - Mars and not close to the earth so it has never been exposed before the astronomical community. European experts said they had to use special software designed to detect mobile objects in the starry sky to determine the presence of TOTAS.
