The creator of the transgenic baby in China is sentenced to 3 years in prison
The Chinese court sentenced three scientists involved in creating genetically modified babies in 2018 to engage in illegal medical activities.
According to Xinhua News Agency, He Jiankui, who led the research on creating a genetically modified baby, received a three-year prison sentence and had to pay a fine of 3 million yuan (about 430,000 USD).
The other two scientists in the study were also sentenced to imprisonment and fines but to a lesser extent.
Specifically, Zhang Renli received a 2-year sentence and a penalty of 1 million yuan (about US $ 143,000). Qin Jinzhou received a sentence of 18 months in prison, but was delayed for 2 years and served a fine of $ 500,000.

He Jiankui, who works at the Southern University of Science and Technology, Shenzhen City, was criticized for ignoring ethical and scientific rules when editing embryos. He once confirmed his research was a breakthrough that could 'control the HIV pandemic'.
The research led to the birth of two genetically modified twins Lula and Nana at the end of 2018, which shocked the world scientists. He was also involved in the study of creating another genetically modified baby, according to AP.
In response to the domestic and international backlash, the National Health Commission immediately ordered investigations into the experiment.
Authorities in China said in late January that the world's first genetically engineered baby experiment violated the country's laws.
Investigators of the Guangdong Provincial Health Commission said the incident was originally identified as a state-banned embryo transformation operation.
The agency said that He conducted the experiment "to gain personal reputation and assets, with self-mobilized funds, secretly recruiting relevant personnel and deliberately evading surveillance".
