The great tragedy raged and made the island Guam

US authorities are headache to try to erase the invasive snakes that are plaguing Guam, pushing native birds to the brink of extinction.

Guam, a small island in the western Pacific Ocean, is confronting a brown tree tragedy following the US Navy cargo ships that entered the World War II 70 years ago, according to RT.

About two million brown tree snakes are distributed in many areas on the island 48km long, equivalent to 5000 snakes / km 2 . They emanated from the US naval base in the port of Apra Harbor in the mid-1940s. Researchers believe that brown tree snakes do not come from the United States but live in other Pacific islands, where the US military passes.

Brown snakes are the culprits that disturb the ecosystem on Guam, erasing most native birds. In fact, 10 out of 12 native bird species in Guam disappeared in the mid-1980s, according to research published in Nature Communications. Some other bird species can only be found in special breeding centers.

The devastated bird population also severely affected the flora of Guam due to a sharp decrease in the number of seedlings. The rate of new crops on the island declined by 92%.

The US government spent millions of dollars to erase this harmful snake. They not only slaughtered wild animals but caused $ 4.5 million in damage to the military's electrical system over the past 7 years.

The US Department of Agriculture has even released thousands of dead rats that impregnated paracetamol into the island in a program of killing brown trees for $ 8 million in 2013. Preliminary research shows that many brown snakes are trapped, but it is still too early to assess the effectiveness of the program on the number of snakes on the island.
