Sophisticated, sneaky snake species

A new study indicates that the fenced snake species may have "hitched" on military aircraft from Australia to expand its territory to the Guam Pacific region.

According to Professor Bryan Fry from the University of Queensland, the process of territorial expansion on Guam of the tree-fencing snake began when they were accidentally brought into the Pacific island during World War II.

"This snake has been following military vehicles from Australia to come here and massacre many native birds that make some species extinct. Only 3 species are found on the island now," he said.

The venom of the tree's solid barrier contains two separate toxins that make their bites 1000 times more toxic than the mammalian bites to birds and reptiles.

"The devastating effect of this snake is terrible, now it is among the worst pests of all time," the professor added.

According to Fry, in the past 80 years, this snake is still "taking advantage" of air travel to expand its operations.

"The US government is still using military airplanes from Guam to Hawaii and these snakes are still having a chance to go away. If these flights continue, their sweeping of Hawaii's birds like did Guam just a matter of time , " said Fry.

Tree rakes come from Indonesia, Solomon Islands, New Guinea and Australia, according to the US Geological Survey.
