The largest animal herds in the world
Red crabs, antelopes and herring are species with a large number of individuals concentrated in herds of up to tens of millions of animals.
1. Australian red crab
In the rainy season, the red crab herds of millions on Christmas Island, Australia, migrate to the sea to start a new breeding season. The migratory journey of red crabs will start from the forests of Christmas Island to the Indian Ocean coast. The number of red crabs in migratory crabs can range from 40 million to 120 million. During the season of red crab migration, road signs for vehicles and pedestrians are located in many parts of the region. (Photo: Barcroft Media)
2. Springbok antelope
This antelope can concentrate into herds of tens of millions of animals. A huge herd of antelopes can be longer than 140km. However, today the number of Springbok antelopes has not been as much as before due to hunting, habitat loss and disease. (Photo: ShutterStock)
3. Herring
Gathering is a common feature of fish species. However, herring is the species with the largest number of concentrated fish in the population. According to the researchers, the number of children in herring can reach tens of millions of children, covering dozens of km 2 . Fish live in large colonies to limit the risk of being eaten or focused on reproduction. (Photo: ShutterStock)
4. Ants Argentina
Recently, scientists discovered a giant colony of Argentinian ants with a number of ants that can cover almost the globe. The largest ant colony can last nearly 6,000 km along the Mediterranean coast. (Photo: waynesword.palomar.edu)
5. Krill shrimp
Krill shrimp are small crustaceans, living in large flocks. The density of individuals in the herd can reach 10,000-30,000 in a cubic meter. They can be found in every ocean in the world, but the largest amount of krill in the Antarctic waters. The size of a giant herd of krill is usually about 10km long and 30m deep. 6. Grasshopper
Millions of children are a nightmare for farmers. Even many grasshoppers have trillions. One of the records of giant grasshoppers was recorded in North America in 1875. The size of these grasshoppers is estimated at 500,000 km 2 , equivalent to that of California, USA. The locusts have about 12.5 trillion children. (Photo: Flickr)
7. Ephemeral
An adult plankton usually lives one to two days. Normally, all the plankton will grow almost at the same time, concentrated into large flocks and covering the sky when moving. Because the life cycle of the phytoplankton is quite short, they live concentratedly to maintain reproduction. Of the nearly 2,500 species of plankton in the world, about 630 species are found in North America. (Photos: Wikipedia)
8. Red quelea bird
The red-billed quelea is the world's largest wild bird. When centered on large flocks, the red-billed quelea can damage crops, similar to the harms of grasshoppers. (Photos: Wikipedia)
