Nereus robotic submarine has disappeared while exploring one of the deepest spots in the ocean: the Kermadec Trench, located in northeastern New Zealand.
Rescue teams have recovered the debris from the ship, showing Nereus crashed and exploded due to terrible pressure while operating at a depth of about 10,000m.
Nereus is the flagship of the American scientific community.
"Nereus has helped us explore areas we've never seen before, and helped to ask questions we never thought of ," said Timothy Shank of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. WHOI), which coordinates the operation of the ship.
The $ 8 million robot was built in 2008 and can operate in unmanned mode, or remotely.
