Certainly, the buttercup breed does not originate from China. According to many experts, the breed originated in Africa, based on 19th century texts called "hairless terriers". In addition to the references in literature, there is no official information about their true origins. It is also assumed that they come from Mexico.

There is no detailed information about the past of this breed. However, in the 1950s Deborah Wood founded a hybrid shop called Crest Haven . From there they are bred on a large scale. A famous dancer, Gypsy Rose Lee also regularly breeds this, after which they were introduced into Crest Haven after her death.

These two women contributed to the creation of the two lines of Chinese buttercups typical today. Moreover, in 1959, Wood established an "American Hairless Club" merged into the ACCC Chinese Club Pub Club in 1978. When the breed was recognized by the American Pet Dog Club. in 1991, the ACCC became the most important organization for the Chinese Restaurant Dog. FCI recognized the breed in 1978.

The Powderpuff has a long, soft coat, but its appearance depends on grooming. When feathers grow on the entire muzzle, they look like terriers so they are often shaved around their mouth, nose and eyes.
