Lederman, 92, won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1988 with the discovery of muon neutrinos . He is also known for his book on the Higgs particle entitled The Particle of God . Before the auction, AP quoted Lederman saying that his Nobel Prize had not been noticed for the past 20 years, and selling it was a logical thing.

Lederman used the prize money from the 1988 Nobel Prize to buy a cabin in Idaho, but he did not share his intention to use the Nobel prize. He and his wife hope this activity will contribute to raising awareness of physical research in the US and around the world.

This is the second Nobel Prize sold by the recipient himself when he is alive. Last year, James Watson , who received the Nobel Prize in 1962 with the discovery of DNA structure, also made the same decision.
