The rarest animal in the world, only found in Vietnam

This rare and endangered animal was discovered in Vietnam's Truong Son mountain range in 1997.

The Truong Son Muntiacus (scientific name Muntiacus truongsonenis) is a species of ungulate belonging to the deer family Cervidae, subfamily Muntiacinae, genus Muntiacus.

The Truong Son muntjac was discovered in the Truong Son mountain range in Vietnam in 1997. After many years of not being seen, it was thought that this muntjac species was extinct. However, in 2021, researchers discovered the Truong Son muntjac in the mountainous forest area of ​​Thua Thien-Hue.

In the past 5 years, through biodiversity monitoring activities, the park has recorded the appearance of this species in many locations in Bach Ma forest through a system of camera traps.

Notably, in March this year, two Truong Son leopards were seen and photographed by foreign tourists on Bach Ma peak.

In March this year, two Truong Son muntjac individuals were seen by foreign tourists.

Previously, the images of the two individuals posted on social networks received many positive responses, many people were surprised to know that this animal species still exists.

Mr. Hoang Nhu Phuong, who posted on social media, said that the photo of the two Truong Son bears taken at Bach Ma belonged to a French tourist couple.

Late in the afternoon of March 9, 2024, this couple went hunting for photos on Bach Ma mountain and discovered 2 rare Truong Son Mang individuals in the swimming pool area, in front of Phong Lan hotel.

The Truong Son muntjac is an endangered endemic species. The Truong Son muntjac has a body similar to a muntjac, but is smaller than a muntjac and is almost the smallest in the Cervidae family, weighing from 14 - 20kg.

The whole body is covered with fine brown or rusty yellow fur. The four legs are slender. The tail is thick. The male has short, unbranched horns. The skull is shaped like that of a deer, but smaller in size. The eye sockets and lacrimal pits are more rounded. Both males and females have long fangs protruding from the mouth.

The distribution area of ​​Truong Son muntjac is not wide, its habitat is limited to old forests, they are easily hunted and trapped regularly.

In addition to Truong Son mountain range, Bach Ma mountain also has many rare and endangered animals such as: white pheasant, yellow-fronted box turtle, bordered mountain turtle, purple-sided pheasant, pangolin, flying civet, brown-shanked douc langur, etc.
