This fish can pass the cognitive test to the dog, too
Not only cats and dogs, but also octopus - a very intelligent creature could not do. Even humans have trouble.
Dog and cat bosses, though not exceptionally clever, are also considered good thinkers. But there is a small ocean fish, the "fish brain" flood that can surpass two bosses in a cognitive test. It is the ability to recognize yourself in a mirror.
This is a classic test published in the 1970s by psychologist Dr. Gordon Gallup. Gallup gave a group of chimpanzees who never mirror a silver mirror. And after only a short period of time, their actions changed: they recognized themselves in the mirror, and used it to brush and explore themselves.
Elephants are one of the few animals capable of feeling themselves in a mirror.
In fact, not many animals in the world are able to do that. Regardless of chimpanzees, there are only dolphins, elephants, crows, pigeons and some monkeys.
In addition, some candidates are still controversial, like ants and rays, because they are unable to think.
Chimpanzees and gorillas can also realize that
And now, experts from Japan, Germany and Switzerland have collaborated to see if they find evidence that an animal has the ability to perceive itself in a mirror , though their intellect is not high.
Easy to say, hard refresh. The reason is because we don't have a common denominator for the reaction of animals when they see themselves in the mirror.
For example in humans, if you see the ink on your forehead, you will rub it away. It is a sign that you - or the person in general, are able to see yourself in the mirror. And in order to do that, you must have the vision of a person, and the ability to recognize that ink is unusual to clean it.
What about other species? Experts decided to experiment with cleaner wrasse (Labroides dimidatus) . This is a candidate capable of self-awareness, because they have good vision, are able to confirm parasites on other fish bodies, and process them.
The team believes that this fish can do it. They put 10 fish in the tank, with a mirror. At first, they react like any other creature: attacking, mistakenly thinking the mirror image is a competitor.
And this is the latest character with this ability.
But then gradually, they started to be more gentle. Within a few days, they started . dancing - a rather unusual act for this animal. The next step of the experiment, they used gel color applied to the top of 8 heads, in a position so that they can only see when looking in the mirror.
And what is the result? Only one of them takes time to determine the color of the gel. Others brush their heads around surrounding objects, for longer than usual.
However, not everyone agrees. Others claim that they are mistaken for the parasite on the skin of other fish, not themselves.
Even so, this study has significant significance. If animals with the nervous system are very simple - like rays, fish cleaning, even . ants - can still identify themselves in the mirror, then we need another standard to assessing the level of intelligence of animals.
The reason is because even creatures that are considered capable of thinking - like dogs, cats, octopus . do not pass this test. Even people have problems, until they are 6 years old.
