Undersea fiber optic network is longer than 6400km.

The undersea fiber optic network is longer than 6400km from the east coast of the United States in Virginia Beach to the Spanish coastal region in Bilbao. When laying cables, engineers must take into account an average depth of 3353m and hazards including: coral reefs, active earthquakes and volcanic areas.

According to Microsoft, the Marea submarine fiber optic network consists of eight layers of copper-fiber optical cables, a hard plastic layer and a waterproof coating.
