Gunpowder is one of the four great inventions of ancient China. Chinese gunpowder means "fire medicine". Black gunpowder consists of three basic ingredients: sulfur, phosphorus and charcoal. This three-type mixture is very strong. Therefore, people call this mixture "fire medicine" (fiery medicine).
