What does the color of the fire hydrant mean?

Fire hydrants have many different colors such as: red, orange, green, yellow, purple .

Each color usually represents different water supply capacity, in GMP or gallon / minute (1GMP = 3.79 liters / minute).

The higher the GMP, the greater the fire extinguisher has.

Fire hydrants usually have 4 common colors:

  1. Red: Under 500 GMP (nearly 1900 liters of water / minute).
  2. Orange color: 500-1000 GMP (1900-3800 liters of water / minute).
  3. Green: 1000-1500 GMP (3800-5700 liters of water / minute).
  4. Blue: 1500 GMP (5700 liters of water or more).

However, not all colors represent water supply capacity, some colors indicate where water is supplied.

  1. Yellow indicates that the water is taken from the public water supply system.
  2. Purple water pillars means water is taken from ponds and lakes.
