Rescuers said the elephants fell into the pit when they came here to drink water. The walls of the pit are so steep and slippery that elephants cannot climb on their own. When the water in the pit began to dry up, they were stuck between the muddy puddles.

Villagers, wildlife protection agencies and local authorities work together to create a way out for elephants."After we watered them, some villagers helped cut bamboo leaves for them to eat because they did not eat anything for 4 days. We dug the ladder around the pit wall, then put the wooden planks for them to step over." , a local official recounted.

10 out of 11 elephants climbed out of the crater successfully, only one young elephant was too weak to move. The lifeguards have to tie ropes around themselves and pull it up."Mother elephants can abandon children if they smell like humans , " said Olly Griffin, a staff member of the WCS Cambodia. Protected area staff are watching the elephants to see if this small elephant is being accepted.
