What is a mosquito?
Midges (also known as gnats) are tiny, winged insects that fly in swarms outdoors. They typically live in dense, damp vegetation and reproduce continuously. There are many different types of gnats, some of which feed on the blood of both humans and pets. They are similar to mosquitoes in that only female gnats feed on blood.
At first glance, these insects look relatively similar to mosquitoes; however, they are only 1-3mm in size and divided into three distinct parts. They appear in large numbers during the summer or in humid weather after thunderstorms. Additionally, light is highly attractive to gnats, so they often swarm around lighting systems in homes.
Although gnats are smaller than mosquitoes, they are just as dangerous as their "counterparts."
Because of their extremely small size, gnats are difficult to detect early on; we only feel them when a bite causes swelling and inflammation. Gnaw bites cause redness, itching, and discomfort, and can lead to infection. They are also carriers of many dangerous infectious diseases.
Although gnats are small, they cause immense harm and transmit diseases like no other.
We rarely hear much about this insect, so we don't know how harmful it can be. According to experts, if your house has many gnats, you need to eradicate them immediately to avoid a series of harmful effects, especially in houses with many children:
Mites suck human blood and cause skin inflammation.
As mentioned, gnats are similar to mosquitoes; only female gnats suck blood to sustain their growth and reproduction. They always need a supply of protein to thrive and help their bodies form eggs. Therefore, the gnat breeding season is when they are most active and have the strongest urge to suck blood.
When gnats suck human blood, they leave behind itchy, uncomfortable red rashes on the skin. These rashes are also prone to infection and pus formation in people with allergies. In Vietnam, gnats are usually nocturnal, and being bitten by one can make it difficult for people to get a good night's sleep.
Transmitting diseases and parasites into the human body.
Mites contain various viruses and parasites that cause disease. If bitten, the pathogens will travel through the mite's blood and enter the body of humans and pets. After entering the body, they begin an incubation period and wait for enough time to manifest the disease.
It causes trouble and annoyance for the whole family.
Mites are attracted to light in a similar way to moths. Therefore, they are often "bewitched" by indoor lights and swarm around them, causing discomfort for many families. Not to mention, they can also suck blood from people and pets, especially during their breeding season.
When driving, car headlights attract gnats, posing a danger to road users. If a gnat flies into your eye while driving, the risk of an accident is very high. Therefore, you need to take measures to eliminate and prevent gnats as soon as possible.
How do I get rid of gnats from my house?
Unlike mosquitoes, we cannot prevent gnats by using mosquito nets because their bodies are so small that they can squeeze through the holes in the mesh. Therefore, appropriate measures are needed to eliminate gnats without affecting health, specifically as follows:
- You can eat garlic to repel gnats because the human body emits a scent that gnats avoid. If you don't like eating it, you can cut the garlic into small pieces and place them by the window; they will create a scent that prevents gnats from entering the room. Alternatively, you can place garlic cloves in flower pots, near the door, etc., to block gnats from flying into the house.
Mosquitoes like to feed on the blood of humans and pets to grow and reproduce.
- For those who enjoy flowers and plants, consider adding lemongrass, rosemary, lavender, perilla, geraniums, etc. These plants not only emit a distinctive fragrance that can repel gnats and insects, but also help purify the air around the house.
- According to ancient beliefs, hanging sachets filled with herbs like vetiver, mint, dill, and perilla is effective in repelling mosquitoes and gnats. These sachets also help people stay alert and relaxed during hot summer days.
- Add some laundry detergent to a basin of water and leave it overnight . The next morning, you'll find many dead mosquitoes and gnats. This is because the alkaline nature and pleasant scent of detergent attract mosquitoes and gnats, who mistake it for a delicious aroma and lay their eggs there. However, they cannot reproduce in alkaline water, so they all die.
- You can use insect spray to kill mosquitoes and gnats if you want a quick solution. However, inhaling the fumes from the spray is generally not good for your health, so it's best to spray before leaving the house and absolutely do not stay in the room immediately after spraying.
What should you do if you get bitten by gnats, and how do you treat gnat bites?
When bitten by gnats, you'll experience red rashes and intense itching. To relieve the itching, you can apply ice to the affected area; the cold will soothe the itching and reduce the burning sensation. If you have essential oils at home , you can apply them as they contain anti-inflammatory and swelling-reducing properties.
You can apply used tea leaves to the itchy area because the tannins in the tea will tighten the skin, allowing the gnat's venom to be expelled more quickly. Or, more simply, cut a thin slice of lemon and rub it on the affected area; the acidity and antibacterial properties of the lemon will help soothe the itching immediately.
