Decoding the Thai monk's case meditating in a boiling oil pan
The video shows the monk coming from the temple of Nong Bua Lamphu (Thailand), sitting quite comfortably in the oil pan being heated . The surrounding people asked the monk to bless him by bringing their things to him.
However, this monk did not use any magic or miracles at all. According to Jessada Denduangboripant, a lecturer at Chulalongkorn University, there is no evidence that the oil in the pan is really boiling: " To test, there is only one way to measure the temperature of the oil in the pan that the monk is sitting on. Look at the oil layer. It's like it's boiling and the pan looks quite strange, maybe the pan has two layers to insulate . "
Denduangboripant also says there are several ways to create hallucinations . In the video posted in 2012, he demonstrated the ability to immerse himself in boiling oil without any harm. He said he poured some water into the bowl, then poured the oil into it. The water will absorb all the heat and therefore the oil never boils.
Meanwhile, the monk's video sits in an oil pan describing that " some herbs have been used to reduce the temperature of the oil pan. However, the oil pan is still potentially dangerous. The monk has taken the challenge. This is to prove strength and determination to the people ".
In the novels of the Great Condor Heroes Dai Hiep, author Kim Dung gave an explanation about this phenomenon. He suggested that it could be poured into a mixture of vinegar and part oil. When boiled, the vinegar will boil first and make foam feel like the oil is boiling. Vinegar is boiled at low temperature, so it is possible to immerse your hands without hurting.
