Why does the crater lake in Iceland have a special turquoise color?

Kerid Crater Lake in Iceland is one of the most beautiful lakes in the country. The lake was formed about 3000 years ago when the magma chamber of a volcano collapsed and created a funnel-shaped crater 55 m deep.

This beautiful blue lake is part of the Tjarnarholar crater complex located in the Grimsnes region in South Iceland. Kerid is about 3000 years old, half the age of most craters found in Iceland. This is the main reason why the slopes of Kerid are red rather than volcanic black because geologically, the iron deposits here are still fresh.

Kerid is about 55m deep and 170m wide. The lake water has such a deep turquoise color because minerals from the rock seep in and "dye" the water to a distinctive blue color.

Scientists believe that Kerid was once a volcanic cone . After the eruption, it is believed that the volcano depleted its magma reserves causing the foundation to collapse on its own and lead to the formation of the lake as it is today. What makes the Kerid crater unique in Iceland is that it was formed by a collapsing volcano instead of an exploding volcano.

Kerid Crater is a very popular destination with tourists. It is located in the volcanic region next to The Golden Circle - Iceland's most popular sightseeing route. This is also a favorite spot for photographers because not only is the lake water a distinctive color, but the lake's surroundings are mainly composed of eye-catching red and black volcanic rocks. These colors have earned Kerid crater lake the nickname the Eye of the World .

Legend has it that the crater lake Kerid connects to the lake located on Mount Burfell. Therefore, when the water in the crater lake recedes, the water level of the lake located on Mount Burfel will increase and vice versa.

In summer, the clear blue lake water and red volcanic rock make the view of Kerid crater beautiful at sunset. In winter, the lake freezes and snow covers everywhere. The scene at the lake when it snows is still very beautiful. However, the snow and ice make the road quite slippery and dangerous.
